Ford Sierra RS Cosworth
Ford wanted to find a way in order to make the come back in motor races. The Sierra shell was the weapon of choice. It took just three years to develop and there was only going to be 5000 cars for homologation purposes. But records show that the total production was 5545, which 2616 came in the UK.
In the very first version of the cosworth the only optionals were the colour of the car and that was only in three choices:
Diamond White
Factory Black
Moonstone Blue
The engine was the original YAA block that was used in earlier ford editions with some changes. That' s why the cossie block was named to YBD. It is a 2.0 litre engine with 16valves and it was turbocharged by a T03 Garrett turbocharger. Of course there was an intercooler and a Weber-Marelli multi point injection. The factory output was 204bhp in 6000rpm and the torgue to 204lbs in 4000rpm.
Was it fast? Of course!!! At that time in 1987 it was the only car which could produce over 100bhp per litre. Autocar magazine clocked this Cosworth to 6.1sec 0-62mph and a 149.8mph top speed. The only cars which could race the cossie were from Porsche and above!
Even after 12 years since the first Cosworths their performance is extraordinary. All the new and high tech cars are compared with this ford and only after 12 years some manage to outperform it, of course only in its factory specs.
The question.'can I make it faster' is totally dull. There are Cosworths in existence which develop over 600bhp. The fanatics know the Severn Valley Sesert Storm Sierra which was clocked to 179.8mph and produced 545bhp at the back wheels. And for the Greeks you all know the Diamond White Sierra Cosworth of (you know Who!!!) which burns nitrous and can thrash GSX-R1100s, F40s and Bugatti EB110s...!!!
Enough talk. Now see some pictures of the best car EVER produced
